Municipal general elections

September 5, 1996

Québec City, September 5, 1996 --- Within the framework of the November 3rd municipal elections, Pierre-F. Côté, Q.C., Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, would like to remind voters of the municipalities of:

Beauport, Charlesbourg, La Baie*, Saint-Eustache, Saint-Hubert, Saint-Hyacinthe, Sainte-Julie, Sorel et Val-d'Or

that they can make a contribution to the authorized political parties and independent candidates of their choice.

Only a voter, namely a natural person who is entitled to be entered on the electoral list of a municipality, may make a contribution. The latter must be made by the voter out of his or her own property. Contributions from legal entities (companies, unions, etc.) are formally prohibited.

At the municipal level the total contributions made by a voter in a given year may not exceed $750. However, this sum may be split between several authorized parties and independent candidates.

A contribution of $100 or less may be made in cash. However, any contribution of over $100 must be made by cheque signed by the voter and drawn on his or her personal bank account.

A receipt must be issued to the voter for every contribution. However, contributions made in the municipal field are not tax-deductible.
