Guilty verdict announced in the Montréal region
July 12, 2010
Québec City, July 12, 2010 – Québec Chief Electoral Officer Marcel Blanchet wishes to inform the public that a verdict of guilty has been announced in a case involving infractions of the Election Act.
In Montréal, Katia Proulx, an independent candidate in the riding of Jeanne-Mance-Viger in the general elections of December 8, 2008, contravened the Election Act by failing to name an official agent after the resignation of the person who previously held that position. Between November 23, 2008, and March 10, 2009, while she was authorized as an independent candidate, Ms. Proulx was not in compliance with paragraph 410 of the Election Act, which states that when the official agent designated in the nomination papers resigns, the candidate must immediately appoint another agent.
After a hearing by default on June 7, the judge declared the defendant guilty of the charge brought against her and ordered her to pay a fine of $500 plus costs.
