Reform of political financing and the control of election expenses - The Chief Electoral Officer makes a positive assessment and recommends further action
Quebec City, September 4, 2014 –– In a report released today, the Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Lucie Fiset, provides a positive assessment of the reforms to political financing and the control of election expenses in Québec enacted since 2010. “We have come a long way in terms of cleaning up financing and improved enforcement of rules, and this has helped restore citizens’ faith in our democratic institutions,” Ms. Fiset pointed out, “especially since the new powers granted to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer since 2010 have made us more effective in our role as watchdog and prosecutor before the courts.”

Comparison of 2009 and 2013 election years in Québec - The municipal political parties and authorized independent candidates received fewer resources in 2013
Québec City, June 19, 2014 –– The Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Mr. Jacques Drouin, today announces the publication of an accessible information document titled “Data and statistics in municipal financing”. This document can be found on the DGEQ’s website at www.electionsquebec.qc.ca. It confirms, among other things, that when comparing the 2009 electoral year to that of 2013, the municipal political parties and authorized independent candidates received fewer resources in 2013.

Jacques Drouin, the Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, will step down on July 11 of this year
Quebec City, April 24, 2014 – The Chief Electoral Officer and Chair of the Commission de la représentation électorale du Québec, Jacques Drouin, will step down on July 11, 2014, bringing to an end a 36-year career in the Québec civil service, including 34 years with the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (DGE). Mr. Drouin tendered his resignation yesterday to Jacques Chagnon, Speaker of the Québec National Assembly.

Quebec City, April 10, 2014 – In answer to a request received from the party leader, the Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Jacques Drouin, withdrew his authorization of the Équipe Harel - Vision Montréal municipal party, effective April 7, 2014.

Press release no. 22 – April 7, general election - Close to 5 million electors are invited to the polls tomorrow
Québec, April 6, 2014 – Mr. Jacques Drouin, Chief Electoral Officer, invites close to 5 million electors to exercise their right to vote tomorrow, election day. They are electors who have not already voted at the advance polling from March 28 to April 3. From 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., 21 617 polling stations will be open and ninety thousand election officers will be on hand to administer the election. A total of 814 candidates are hoping to win the favour of the electorate.

Press release no. 21 – April 7, 2014 general election - Final advance polling figures: 19,27 % of the electors registered exercised their right to vote
Québec, April 4, 2014 –– Mr. Jacques Drouin, Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, wishes to announce that 1 153 058 electors exercised their right to vote in the advance poll by using the various methods offered to them between March 28 and April 3. This total corresponds to 19,27 % of the total number of electors registered prior to the special revision, which also ended Thursday.

Press release 20 –April 7, 2014 general election - A new measure will facilitate secure access to polling stations for persons with reduced mobility
Quebec City, April 2, 2014 –In connection with the April 7 vote, the Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Jacques Drouin, wishes to inform persons with reduced mobility that further to an agreement reached with the political parties represented at the National Assembly, they will be able to vote in a polling station other than the one they have been assigned, if theirs is inaccessible. The agreement completes the work carried out in the various electoral divisions of Québec to reduce as much as possible the number of polling places which a person in a wheel chair, for example, would find inaccessible.

Press release no. 19 – April 7, 2014 general election - Advance polling update after Day 2 : 1 057 706 electors exercised their right to vote
Québec, April 1, 2014 –– At the end of the second day of advance polling held yesterday, March 31, Mr. Jacques Drouin, Chief Electoral Officer, announces that 1 057 706 electors exercised their right to vote to date. This total corresponds to 17,68 % of the total number of electors registered on the lists of electors prior to the special revision. For yesterday, the turnout rate was 8,31%.

Press Release No. 17 – General Elections of April 7, 2014 - On-Campus Voting – To Facilitate Voting for Young Electors
Québec City, March 27, 2014 – Schools in Québec attended by student electors are about to experience a “democratic first”, as on-campus voting begins tomorrow for the general election of April 7 next. This new measure has been put in place in universities, CEGEPs, colleges and vocational training centres that have at least 300 student electors. According to the Chief Electoral Officer’s estimates, more than 400,000 students will be able to take advantage of the new measure, since more than 300 polling stations will be opened in roughly 175 educational institutions.

Press Release no. 15 – April 7, 2014 general election - 18 273 Quebecers staying in 117 countries are registered to “vote outside Québec”
Quebec City, March 26, 2014 ––The Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Jacques Drouin, wishes to announce that 18 273 electors who are temporarily absent from Québec have registered for postal voting for the April 7, 2014 general election. These electors are either certain to be staying or expect to be staying in 117 countries, on every continent, on polling day. The total of 18 273 electors registered to “vote outside Québec” is the highest ever recorded in the general elections over the past 25 years.

Press release no 14 - 815 candidates will be running in the April 7 general election
Quebec city, March 22, 2014 – In preparation for the upcoming April 7th general election, Mr. Jacques Drouin, Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, announces that after the period for filing nomination papers, which ended at 2 p.m. today, 815 nomination papers have been accepted in the 125 electoral divisions of Québec. In comparison, 894 candidates ran in the 2012 general election. Consequently, there are 79 candidates less than in the last election.

The Chief Electoral Officer wishes to clarify information concerning the revision of the lists of electors
Quebec City, March 22, 2014 – In recent days, information has been circulated that clearly shows a misconception on the part of some people regarding the procedure used to revise the lists of electors, and in particular regarding the notion of domicile. The Chief Electoral Officer has therefore produced information documents that will be distributed in order to help electors and boards of revisors to understand these aspects.
