Québec, June 2, 2011 – Today, the Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Mr. Jacques Drouin, is proceeding with the nomination of 17 returning officers. In each electoral division the returning officer carries out all of the activities related to the holding of an election or a referendum and sees to the application of the laws administered by the Chief Electoral Officer.
Québec, January 20, 2010 – The Chief Electoral Officer of Québec has launched a recruitment competition to fill the position of returning officer in the electoral divisions of Jacques-Cartier, Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Saint-Henri-Sainte-Anne and Robert-Baldwin. The objective is to appoint a major democracy player whose mandate will be to represent the Chief Electoral Officer in the electoral division, in particular by organizing and holding electoral events, such as general elections and by-elections. Interested persons have until 4:30 p.m. on February 4, 2011 to apply. A two-stage selection process will make it possible to choose a returning officer who will be appointed for a 10-year term of office.
Québec, March 17, 2010 – In order to provide the decision makers with the most comprehensive picture regarding the various choices proposed, the Chief Electoral Officer has analyzed the impacts of 5 different scenarios for the organization and simultaneous holding of polls, as well as the entire electoral process for various levels of integrating the school and municipal operations. In light of his review, the Chief Electoral Officer believes that the school and municipal organizations are the best placed to organize and hold simultaneous elections.
Québec, March 17, 2010 – In order to meet a request for consultation from the minister of Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport (MELS) and Affaires municipales, des Régions et de l’Occupation du territoire (MAMROT), the Chief Electoral Officer of Quebec, Mr Marcel Blanchet, is today making public a notice on the proposed modifications to the Act respecting school elections, where the organization has studied the hypothesis of holding simultaneous school and municipal elections.

Greater accountability by the various actors, broader powers for the Chief Electoral Officer, the clarification of certain rules and the addition of new ones, greater transparency, as well as better information of the various stakeholders in an election are some of the strategies proposed to make financing rules more effective.
