The Act respecting school elections (ASE) stipulates that general elections shall be held in all school boards in Québec on the first Sunday in November, every four years.
Bill 86 received assent on June 11, 2010. It postponed the general elections for school boards planned for 2011 to a later date to be set by the government.
On November 9, 2012, the Ministre de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport announced that school board elections would be held in the Fall of 2014. The elections were held on November 2, 2014.
Sixty-nine school boards, namely 60 French-speaking boards and nine (9) English-speaking ones, saw the election of 712 school board councillors (617 for the French-speaking and 95 for the English-speaking boards). Additionally, for the first time, the 69 chairs of the school boards were elected at the same poll.
