The role of the Commission de la représentation électorale (CRE)

The main organization responsible for the division of the municipal territory into electoral districts is the school board. The council of commissioners adopts a resolution for this purpose in the year that precedes the school general election. The Commission de la représentation électorale (CRE) may intervene in this process for two reasons:

  • The resolution adopted by the council of commissioners does not comply with the deviations stipulated in the ASE to ensure a balance in the populations of the various electoral districts.
  • There is an objection by electors, under the conditions stipulated in the Act, to the by-law adopted by the school board.
