Citizen round table

Interview with Brian Smith

"For me, participating in the Citizen round table means helping to strengthen democratic life in Québec by sharing my ideas and taking part in stimulating discussions about the different aspects of our electoral process. There are certain things that are of particular interest to me, such as democracy education and voter information."

Why did you choose to be a member of the Citizen round table?

“For two reasons I think. I worked for a few years on issues relating to governance, especially abroad, and it made me reflect on the importance of the democratic system. So, I wanted to be able to contribute to discussions about this. I also thought I could learn a lot more about the electoral process and in much greater detail. These two expectations were definitely met!”

Did your perception of certain issues evolve throughout the meetings of the Citizen round table? And if so, in what way?

“I would say yes. I have a better understanding now of many logistical and technical aspects of elections. For example, the challenge of recruiting election officers, the role of political parties in that process and all of the challenges associated with citizen involvement and making people more aware of the electoral process.”
