Referendum on the creation of a regional government - A call goes out to contact electors outside Nunavik

March 25, 2011

Québec, March 25, 2011 – Adamie Padlayat, Chief returning officer of the referendum in Nunavik, requests the collaboration of all persons who know Inuit beneficiaries of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement living outside Nunavik to invite them to exercise their right to vote in this referendum. Only those persons whose name will appear on the referendum list will be able to vote on April 27th or on the other days when voting will be possible. These electors will be able to vote either by mail or at a polling station in Montréal. Electors have up until April 14th to request their entry on the list. In the meantime, it is possible to check existing entries by contacting Sonia Gosselin-Alaku, the local returning officer at the Montréal office.

Persons who do not reside in Nunavik, but who are Inuit beneficiaries of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement, can have their say on the Final Agreement concerning the creation of a regional government. To promote the maximum participation of these electors in the referendum, Mr. Padlayat would like to make use of different means to reach these persons who do not live in one of the 14 Inuit communities of Nunavik. As personal contacts are a good way of reaching people, he asks residents of the territory to contact their relatives, friends or acquaintances who do not live on the territory, but who might have the right to vote in the referendum.

The revision of the referendum list will take place from April 11th to 14th. During this period, it will be possible to have one’s name entered on the list or to make corrections to an existing entry.

Sonia Gosselin-Alaku, the local returning officer at the Montréal office, is in charge of the revision of the referendum list for electors outside Nunavik. She can be reached at the following telephone number: 514 745-8880, in Montréal, or at the following toll-free number: 1 800 361-7052.
