Referendum on the creation of the Nunavik Regional Government - April 20th will be advance polling day

April 18, 2011

Québec, April 18, 2011 – It is the day after tomorrow, Wednesday, April 20th, that advance polling will be held for the referendum on the creation of the Nunavik Regional Government. Electors who live in Nunavik will be able to exercise their right to vote from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the office of the local director of the referendum of their village. In the Montréal region, the Inuit beneficiaries of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement will also be able to participate in advance polling, according to the same schedule, at the office of the local director of the referendum, located at 1111 du boulevard Dr.-Frederik-Philips, in the borough of Saint-Laurent.

Other possibilities are also offered to electors who would like to vote this week. Indeed, they can go to the office of the local director of the referendum tomorrow, April 19th, as well as on Thursday and Friday, April 21st and 22nd, both in the villages of Nunavik and in Montréal. It should, however, be noted that on these dates voting will be possible at regular office hours.

As the actual poll is getting under way, Adamie Padlayat, regional director of the referendum, issues a call to all Inuit and other residents of Nunavik concerned by their referendum and invites them to have their say on the Final Agreement concerning the regional government. He notably reiterates that a minimum number of electors entered on the referendum list must have approved the Agreement in order for it to be officially adopted. Indeed, the approval of the Agreement is conditional upon a majority of the votes cast at the time of the referendum being in favour of the Agreement and that this majority represents at least 25% plus one of all electors qualified to vote.
