Referendum on the creation of the regional governement of Nunavik - Polling day : the electors are invited to vote

April 26, 2011

QuébecCity, April 26th 2011. It is tomorrow, Wednesday April 27th, that the referendum on the creation of the regional government of Nunavik will take place. The electors of the 14 villages on the territory, as well as the Inuit people who benefit from the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement and who live outside Nunavik are entitled to partake in this referendum. There are 7881 individuals in total who are able to answer Yes or No to the following question:

“Do you approve the Final Agreement on the creation of the Nunavik Regional Government?”

It is important to remember that the final Agreement on the creation of the Nunavik Regional Government was concluded between the federal government, the government of Québec and the Makivik Society, which represents the interests of the Inuit people who benefit from the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement. Particularly, the Agreement foresees the fusion of three important public organisms, the Kativik regional Administration (or ARK, the region’s supra municipal administration), the Kativik School Board (CSK) and the regional health and social services Board (RSSSSN).

For the people who live in Nunavik, the polling stations will be open from 9.30AM to 8.00PM, at the office of the local referendum returning officer in their village. In the Montreal area, the Inuit people who benefit from the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement will also be able to vote, following the same schedule, at the office of the local referendum returning officer, 1111 Dr.-Frederik-Philips Blvd, 3rd floor, in the Saint-Laurent borough.

The approval of the Agreement is conditional on a majority of votes in favour of the Agreement at the moment of the referendum, and that the majority represents at least 25% of the voters plus one, out of all the electors who can vote.
