Press release No. 8 – By-election of December 5, 2011 - This coming Sunday and Monday electors in the electoral division of Bonaventure will be able to vote through advance polling

November 23, 2011

Quebec City, November 23, 2011 – The Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Jacques Drouin, would like to remind electors from the electoral division of Bonaventure that there will be advance polling on November 27 and 28, 2011. This opportunity to vote is available to all those who do not wish to vote on December 5, 2011, the day of “ordinary” voting. Moreover, as of Friday, it will be possible to exercise one’s right to vote at the office of the returning officer of the electoral division. As such, the electors of Bonaventure will have seven consecutive days on which to vote.

Incidentally, those who may need to take advantage of the special revision of the electoral list will be able to do so until December 1, 2011, at 2:00 p.m.

Advance polling

Advance polling will take place on Sunday, November 27 and Monday, November 28, between 9:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Electors wishing to vote must establish their identity after providing the scrutineer with their name and address. Proof of identity is established by producing any one of the following documents: a health insurance card, a driver’s licence, a Canadian passport, a certificate of Indian Status, or a Canadian Armed Forces identity card.

To obtain the address of the advance polling station that they have been assigned, electors are invited to consult the notice that was recently sent to them. They can also consult the special section dedicated to the by-election on the website of the Chief Electoral Officer, at www.electionsquebec.qc.ca, or contact the Information Centre of the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer at the following numbers:

1-888-ELECTION (1-888-353-2846) or
1-800-537-0644 – telecommunications device for the deaf (TDD).

Special revision

Electors unable to have taken advantage of the regular revision period have one last chance to register on the list of electors, make a correction to their registration, or ask that their name be struck off the list. In order to carry out any of these procedures, they must come to the office of the returning officer by 2:00 p.m. on December 1, 2011, at the latest. Special revision offices are open from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Electors are invited to verify the address of the revision office that they have been assigned by visiting the website of the Chief Electoral Officer or by contacting the returning officer.

Applications for registration filed at special revision offices must be accompanied by two identity documents, including one mentioning the elector’s name and date of birth, and the other, his or her name and domiciliary address. Moreover, contrary to the procedure in effect during the regular revision period, electors must file their applications for special revision on their own behalf.

Mr. Drouin would like to remind those registering on the list of electors during the special revision period that they will not be able to exercise their right to vote through advance polling on November 27 and 28, 2011, but only on the “ordinary” polling day, i.e. on December 5, 2011, or at the offices of the returning officer on the dates mentioned below.

Lastly, it is important to remember that, as opposed to the procedure in effect at the federal level, Québec’s Election Act does not allow for electors to register on the list of electors on polling day. The last date to register on the list of electors is therefore December 1, 2011, at 2:00 p.m.

Even more days to exercise your right to vote

You are unable to vote on December 5, 2011, or on the dates set aside for advance polling? Five more days have been added so that you can exercise your right to vote at the offices of your returning officer:
The dates and times of voting at the offices of the returning officer are as follows:
• Friday, November 25, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.;
• Saturday, November 26, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.;
• Tuesday, November 29 and Wednesday, November 30, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and
• Thursday, December 1, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

To find out which office they have been assigned, electors can consult the website of the Chief Electoral Officer or contact the returning officer.
