Definition

Personal information is information about an individual that allows them to be directly or indirectly identified. For example, an individual’s name, address, telephone number, or email address is considered personal information.

The collection of personal information

Our website allows us to collect your personal information for providing our online services. Your personal information is collected when you:

  • Ensure your name is on the list of electors
  • Register to vote outside Québec
  • Make a contribution to a provincial political party
  • Submit your application as part of a recruitment campaign (to become a returning officer, an election officer, a member of the Citizen round table, etc.)
  • Subscribe to a mailing list

We also collect your personal information when you send us a complaint or comment, and when you contact our information centre by email or chat.

If you contact us or use one of our online forms, we collect only the personal information we need to process your request. If requested information is not required to respond to you (on certain forms, for example), we will state that the information is optional.

The personal information we collect on our website is confidential and is subject to the Act respecting access to documents held by public bodies and the protection of personal information.

The use of personal information

We use your personal information to process your online requests or to respond to your email. We will not use this information for any other purpose without your consent. This information is only accessible to our staff members who are authorized to use it.

During your visit, your browser exchanges data with our server. We use cookies that allow us to remember specific information about your device to make it easier for you to navigate our website. Your device creates and stores these files. They do not allow Élections Québec to identify you.

You can disable the use of cookies at any time using your browser options. However, this may prevent you from using certain online services or features. For example, a warning message that you close may be displayed several times, because our website cannot detect that you read it.

Usage statistics

We use Google Analytics to obtain data on the traffic to our website and to better understand the interests of the people who visit it. When you visit our site, Google Analytics automatically collects the following information:

  • The IP address of your device
  • The type of browser you are using
  • Your operating system
  • The pages you visit
  • The date and time of your visit
  • The address of the site from which you accessed our site

Use of marketing tracking tools

We use marketing tracking tools from Facebook and Twitter, also known as web pixels, on certain pages of our website. These tools allow us to know that you perform certain actions while browsing. If you express an interest in a topic, by visiting a particular section of our site for example, we may use this information to retarget advertising. You may therefore receive personalized advertising from us when you visit Facebook, Twitter, or their partner websites.

We need your consent to use these tracking tools. When we use them on our website, a notice will be displayed to allow you to consent to their use. By agreeing to the use of these tracking tools, certain elements of your visit to our website are matched to the profile you hold with that third party. The use of these tracking tools does not allow Élections Québec to identify you.

Network security

We share the IP address of your computer, the date and time of your visit, and the pages you visit with our service provider Cloudflare. This communication is necessary to ensure the integrity of our website.
