Returning officer is not your ordinary job. It involves coordinating, with the support of Élections Québec’s experienced staff, the organization and conduct of provincial elections across an entire electoral division over a period of 10 years. The person hired as returning officer must be available full time during provincial by-elections, general elections and referendums.
In the case of persons who have a full-time job when a provincial election is held in their electoral division, the Election Act provides for an unpaid leave of absence from their employer so they can perform their duties as a returning officer.
