Municipal by-elections

See field: provincial, school board

Municipal by-elections may be held when a councillor or mayor position becomes vacant.

  • If the position becomes vacant more than 12 months before the next scheduled municipal general election date, the returning officer of the municipality is required to call a by-election to fill the vacancy.
  • If the position becomes vacant less than 12 months before the municipal general election date, the municipal council may decide whether or not a by-election will be held.

The returning officer sets the date of the by-election, which must be held on a Sunday no more than four months after the municipal has been informed that the position is vacant.

The table below shows various by-elections underway or that have been held in recent months in municipalities with 5,000 or more inhabitants. By-elections are also held in municipalities with less than 5,000 inhabitants.

For further information, please contact the returning officer for each municipality. If necessary, please refer to Québec's Répertoire des municipalités (municipal directory – in French) maintained by the ministère des Affaires municipales et de l'Habitation (municipal affairs and housing department).
