Small polling stations

Summary

Small polling stations allow children accompanying their parents to learn about the electoral process by voting for themselves.

In this section

During a provincial election, the Voters in training program provides an opportunity for voters to experience democracy as a family! Small polling stations set up in each polling station allow children to vote, like their parents, by answering a question specially designed for them. The small polling stations are specifically designed for children between the ages of 3 and 12, but they are open to all young people under the age of 18 who want to learn about the electoral process.

Dates

Small polling stations will be back for the next general provincial election.

  • Advance polling: [date -8] and [date -7] from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Voting on election day: [date 0] from 9:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Question

During the 2026 general provincial election, children will have a chance to answer the question below (in French):

Being a citizen means being part of a group, like your city, your town, your family or your school. It also means knowing how to deal well with others. How do you show you’re a good citizen?

  1. I'm accepting of people who are different from me.
  2. I provide help to those who need it.
  3. I express my own ideas and listen to those of others.
  4. I offer solutions to problems.

How it works

  1. The children first accompany their parent to familiarize themselves with the voting process: reception at the polling station, secret vote behind the polling booth, placing the ballot in the ballot box, etc.
  2. They then go to the small polling station.
  3. They receive their own ballot with the question specially designed for them.
  4. Following the example of their parent, they fill out their own ballot and place it in a ballot box. The staff gives them a temporary tattoo afterwards.
  5. A few days after the vote, the children and their parents can see the results of the small polling station vote on the Élections Québec website.

The small polling stations are particularly aimed at children aged 3 to 12, but they are open to all young people under the age of 18 who want to learn about the electoral process.
