A Political Party Changes its Name in Québec
On February 13, 2006, the Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Me Marcel Blanchet, authorized the party Union des forces progressistes to change its name. The party, as well as its 20 authorities, will now be known as: Québec solidaire.

Investigation by the Chief Electoral Officer of Québec Concerning Certain Revelations Contained in the Book Les secrets d’Option Canada*
The Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Me Marcel Blanchet, has announced the appointment Hon. Bernard Grenier, a retired Québec Court judge, as the investigating commissioner in charge of examining certain allegations made in the book Les secrets d’Option Canada, by Normand Lester and Robin Philpot, and more specifically all the documents submitted by the authors. This appointment follows the Chief Electoral Officer’s decision last Decem ber to review its investigation into Option Canada.

Legal Action Taken by the Chief Electoral Officer - Guilty Plea
The Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Me Marcel Blanchet, would like to inform the public that a guilty plea was entered in a case concerning a violation of the Election Act. The case concerned the filing of a false report of election expenses after the 2003 provincial elections.

303 Polling Stations will be Open on Polling Day

Electors in the Electoral Divisions of Outremont and Verchères can Take Advantage of the Special Revision and the Advance Poll
The Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Me Marcel Blanchet, would like to remind electors concerned that they can take advantage of the special revision and advance poll for the by-elections of December 12, in the electoral divisions of Outremont and Verchères. The special revision will take place from November 30 to December 7, 2005, while the advance poll will take place on December 4 & 5, 2005.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Québec Appoints Hon. Jean Moisan as Investigating Commissioner
The Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Me Marcel Blanchet, has announced the appointment of Hon. Jean Moisan, a retired superior court judge, as the investigating commissioner in charge of examining certain information that was revealed in the initial report of the Gomery commission. This appointment ensues from the decision of the Chief Electoral Officer (published on November 2, 2005), to investigate allegations made before the Gomery commission. The Chief Electoral Officer will attempt to determine if certain contributions paid to provincial political parties were in violation of the Election Act. "It is necessary to shed light on this issue," according to Me Blanchet, "to ensure that the public does not lose confidence in the rules governing political party financing."

A total of 10 nomination papers have been accepted by the Chief Electoral Officer of Québec for the by-elections of December 12, 2005, in the electoral divisions of Outremont and Verchères. The deadline for filing of nomination papers is 2 p.m. today.

Entry on the List of Electors is Mandatory In Order to Vote

The Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Me Marcel Blanchet, would like to remind the public that only qualified electors who are entered on the list of electors will be entitled to vote during the by-election that will take place in the electoral divisions of Outremont and Verchères on Monday, December 12, 2005. The revision of the list of electors will take place from November 21 to 29, 2005, in both electoral divisions.

The Chief Electoral Officer Sees Great Strides for Electors in the Draft Bill of the Election Act

The Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Me Marcel Blanchet, sees great strides in the draft bill of the Election Act for Québec electors. Me Blanchet was speaking today before the Select National Assembly Committee on the Election Act. The Chief Electoral Officer, who was the first person to be heard, first made some comments about the measures affecting the exercise of the right to vote and the right to run in an election.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Québec, Me Marcel Blanchet, will launch an investigation on certain facts contained in the Phase 1 Report of the commission presided over by justice John Gomery. The Chief Electoral Officer will attempt to determine if certain contributions paid to provincial political parties violated the financing rules of the Election Act.
