Description
The Voters in training program is implemented during provincial and municipal general elections. It allows young people to experience a simulated election in a meaningful context.
Schools and organizations can organize learning and awareness-raising activities related to the exercise of the right to vote and civic engagement. These activities, which are part of the Québec Education Program, are divided into three categories:
- Preparing to vote
- Conducting an election simulation
- Further engagement
During provincial election simulations, young people vote for candidates in their electoral division.
During municipal election simulations, young people vote for candidates for the seat of mayor. If the mayor is elected unopposed, they answer a referendum question.
The program also enables children accompanying their parents to the polling station to learn about the electoral process by answering a question specially designed for them at the small polling stations.
Objectives
- Explain how elections and election processes work
- Raise young people’s awareness of the importance of voter turnout
- Encourage students to exercise their role as informed and responsible citizens
