Registering your name on the permanent list of electors or changing your information

Summary

To vote, you need to meet the conditions for voting and be entered on the list of electors at your domiciliary address. If you move, remember to change your address so that your entry is up to date. Don’t wait! You will not be able to be entered on the list or to change your address on election day.

Be entered on the list of electors

If you are not entered on the list of electors, you must submit an application for entry. You can:

Change your address

To notify us of a change of address after a move, we recommend using the Service québécois de changement d’adresse.

Remove your name from the list of electors

If you no longer wish to be entered on the list of electors (for example, because you are moving outside Québec), first consult the You are outside Québec page. If the move is temporary and you meet the criteria explained on this page, you may be able to maintain your entry.

There are three ways to remove your name from the list of electors.

Regardless of which option you choose, you must provide one or more supporting documents to prove your identity and address.

Online

Until [jour -14], you can register or change your registration online. You may also apply in person until [jour -4].

Online registration or modification requests are processed from [-21 au -12].

By mail or fax

You can register or change your registration by mail or fax until [jour -14].

  1. Contact the returning officer of your electoral division for a paper form.
  2. Return the duly completed and signed form by mail or fax to the office of the returning officer. Ensure that the signed, completed form will arrive before [jour -14].

In-person

From [jour -21 au jour -4], go to the office of your returning officer.

The notice of entry that you will receive by mail at the beginning of the election period indicates the location, dates and hours of operation of the office.

Note: you must register before [jour -14] if you wish to vote in advance on [jour -8] or [jour -7].

When and where

Normally, addresses are listed as of [jour -31].

Vote at the same time

If you register your name on the list of electors at the following dates and times, you can also vote in advance. Please note that voting starts half an hour later than the registration. It also ends one hour earlier, except on [jour -4].

  • [jour -10], from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • [jour -9], from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • [jour -6] and [jour -5], from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • [jour -4], from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Via a family member

From [jour -21 au jour -14], a family member, your spouse, or a person who lives with you can submit a request to enter your name on the list of electors or to change your entry on your behalf. They can also request a change in your entry. They will have to present your supporting documents as well as their own.

After [jour -14], only the elector themselves can file an application for registration or change to the list of electors. Please note: if you register on the list of electors during this period, you will not be able to vote during the advance polling days ([jour -8] and [jour -7]), but only during polling days at the office of the returning officer and on election day.

If you are moving

During an election period, if you move more than two weeks before the election, you must vote at the polling station of your new residence. To do this, you must change your address at the board of revisors assigned to your new address.

If you no longer want your name on the list of electors

To remove your name from the list of electors, you can apply to change your registration online, until [jour -14]. From [jour -21 au jour -4], you can also visit the office of your returning officer.

English-language school board list of electors

When a school election is called, we establish the list of electors. This list includes the electors found on the permanent list of electors in each of the school electoral divisions. We then send the list of electors for each English-language school board to the returning officers.

To apply for registration on the list of electors, or to make a change to your entry information, you must visit the revision office no later than [-19]. A parent, your spouse, or a person living with you may make the request for entry or make a correction on your behalf. To register, you must present two pieces of identification.

Revision office

For the location, days and hours of operation of your revision office, see the notice you might receive in the mail at the beginning of the election period from your English-language school board.

If you no longer want your name on the list of electors

To remove your name from the list of electors, you can contact us or write a short letter requesting that your name be removed from the permanent list of electors. Attach a photocopy of two pieces of identification and mail it to us.
